A (growing) list of funding opportunities

Last updated 13th May, 2020 If you are like me, you probably struggle to remember to get dressed in the morning let alone remember a long list of potential funding opportunities. I'm creating this list as a reference. I'll continue to add to it over time. Feel free to use it and share it. There's probably a few other lists out there - if so I would love to compare. Obviously, this one is not…

COVID vs tenure

I suspect this thought is entering people's minds. If 'life' is shutting down, classes transitioned and field seasons uncertain, or just outright cancelled, what happens with tenure? Many research programmes are likely to be negatively impacted by the current COVID measures. Now, I want to be clear that this is not a post about loosening COVID precautions - they are in place for a reason. Rather, this is a serious question about what institutions are…

An update on Echo’s separation anxiety

Just over two months ago, I wrote about Echo's separation anxiety. Well, we have been sticking with it and here is an update. How much progress have you made?In July, we would leave her for an average of 25 mins. She would be quiet/relaxed for, on average, 56% of that time.In August, we would leave her for an average of 51 mins. She would be quiet/relaxed for, on average, 70% of the time. (This was largely…

Life with a separation anxiety dog

I absolutely love dogs. Always have. I used to sit with my grandfather's boxers and read them stories and share my treats with them. They loved me and I loved them. Since then I have nearly always had at least one dog.Ok, this blog isn't necessarily 'science', but it is educational and a good reminder of how life can throw you a curve ball. For the past eight years I have been dog-less. I was…

Prof or hobo: fieldwork fails

Like many, I have done my share of fieldwork over the years.I've sampled in both hemispheres. I've been in big groups, small groups and solo. I have been out collecting in -30 degrees Celsius, simultaneously freezing and sweating while hauling logs through the snow. I've worked in plus 48 degrees Celsius with swarms of black flies that are so thirsty they are trying to suck moisture from the corners of your eyes.I've slept in fancy…

Applying for Genome Canada funding: what to expect

Genome Canada funding is pretty amazing. While I am not sure exactly how much money they make available each year, I think it is safe to assume that it is a lot. They definitely received a $100.5 million commitment from government recently. If you work in the genomics realm, this seems to be (perhaps) THE holy grail for funding. As the name implies, Genome Canada has a mandate to support, accelerate and diversify genomics research within…
