Close encounters with a peregrine falcon

Peregrine falcons — a species that has recovered from near extinction — nest at Johnson’s Mills, high in the cliffs of nearby Dorchester Cape, and use the nearby fields and surrounding shores as hunting grounds. The variety of wildlife that inhabits the area both seasonally and year-round ensures that these predators have enough food for themselves and any offspring they may have.

A bird (book) in the hand: Birds of Nunavut and UBC Press’s legacy of ornithological publishing

In my early days working at University of British Columbia (UBC) Press, I was tasked with maintaining the shelves used to house old and new UBC Press books. As I was shelving books one afternoon, I noticed large volumes of books, seemingly out of line with our more current collection, taking up valuable shelf space. They were bird books!
