Other responsibilities include reviewing and recommending research projects for funding, as well as monitoring progress of network research projects.

Context
The Canadian Mountain Network (CMN) is a federally incorporated, board-governed not-for-profit organization hosted by the University of Alberta. CMN is Canada’s first formal research network dedicated to the sustainability and wellbeing of mountain places and peoples.
Primarily funded by a five-year grant (2019-2023) from the Government of Canada’s Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) program, CMN works with diverse partners from across sectors to deliver an integrated research, training and knowledge mobilization program.

Research Management Committee (RMC) Role and Responsibilities
While all research project funding decisions are the responsibility of the Network’s board, oversight of the research program is the responsibility of the RMC.
Reporting to the board, the RMC is tasked with developing a detailed research agenda and research policies for the Network, recommending funding allocations for calls for proposals, reviewing and recommending research projects for funding, and monitoring progress of network research projects and making recommendations to the Board with respect to continued funding.
Committee Composition
The RMC will consist of up to 15 members including the two CMN co-Research Directors, Dr. Stan Boutin and Norma Kassi, the RMC will represent the diverse sectoral and geographical interests of the Network. The RMC will also represent both Indigenous and Western ways of knowing, as well as diverse disciplines within Western science (i.e., natural/social sciences).
At least four members of the RMC must be independent, including the Chair. Please see the definition of “independent†in Appendix A.
Members can be based within or outside of Canada and can be Canadian or foreign citizens.
Meetings
The RMC is expected to meet three times annually: twice by phone (one to three hours depending on agenda) and once in person at the Network’s Annual Meeting (expectation to participate in the full two-day meeting).
Compensation
A bursary application will be available to facilitate the participation of those who would not serve in the capacity of their salaried position, as well as those without such a position.
