The 2017 Canadian Science Publishing
image contest is here!
A great image can capture a moment, communicate a message, and stir emotion; it can also help us to share the various aspects of our scientific work and communicate scientific phenomena. Images are becoming increasingly important as a way to share and communicate our science with a boarder audience. Participating in the Visualizing Science contest is a great way to promote your research and have the chance to win some great prizes!
We know that our community of authors and researchers are out there creating and capturing amazing science moments in visual form and we want to spread the word about the scientific process at every stage. Help us get your science out to the world by participating.
Last year’s contest was a huge success, with so many images capturing amazing moments in science and research. To see last year’s entries check out the Canadian Science Publishing (CSP) Facebook page. Follow this year’s contest on the Visualizing Science Instagram account.
To submit, fill out the submission form and upload your image. Submissions are open until August 31st at midnight (ET).

Understanding that scientific images are not always photographs, we have opened the image contest to all scientific images (photographs, infographics, images from the lab, computer generated images, etc.). All images should be submitted to one of the three categories.
1. From the FIELD
This category includes all images taken of and during field work including field sketches and photographs.
This category includes all images taken of and during field work including field sketches and photographs. This category will be judged by Christian Lacroix, Editor of Botany. Dr. Lacroix is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Prince Edward Island. He is a developmental plant morphologist best known for his work on leaf complexity and homeosis in flowers.
2. From the LAB
This category includes all images taken within the lab including micrographs and photographs.
This category includes all images taken within the lab including micrographs and photographs. This category will be judged by Phil Burton, Co-Editor of the Canadian Journal of Forest Research. Dr. Burton is a professor of Ecosystem Science and Management at the University of Northern British Columbia. His research addresses ecosystem disturbance and recovery, vegetation dynamics, silviculture, and ecological restoration. In addition, Dr. Burton has long-standing interests in sustainable forest management and planning for resilience in a changing world.
3. From the MACHINE
This category includes all images created in silico (i.e., by computer) including data visualization,

This category will be judged by Melania Cristescu, Co-Editor of Genome. Dr. Cristescu is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in Ecological Genomics. Her research interests

The GRAND PRIZE winner will receive a GoPro® HERO5 Black waterproof camera!
The grand prize winner will be selected by Jesse Hildebrand, our guest judge. Jesse is the founder of Science Literacy Week, a nationwide celebration of science run through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. He has a B.Sc in Ecology from the University of Toronto and a Masters in Science and Society from the Open University.

Terms and Conditions
Successful entries will be selected based on their aesthetics and how well they communicate a scientific phenomenon. The selection of winners for the grand prize and category winners is at the sole discretion of the judges. The winner of the People’s Choice award will be awarded to the photo with the most likes on the Canadian Science Publishing Facebook page between September 11th at 9:00 AM (ET) and October 11th at 9:00 AM (ET).
All appropriate images submitted to the contest will be included as part of the People’s Choice award. The appropriateness of the image is at the sole discretion of the judges and CSP staff.
The competition will be free to enter and open to anyone except those involved in its organization, employees of Canadian Science Publishing and their immediate family, judges of the contest and their immediate family.
Submitted images must be high resolution (at least 300 dpi), .jpg images and cannot exceed 250mb. Please use the submission form to upload your image and provide all relevant information.
Each individual is allowed to submit a maximum of five entries for each category. Each entry must be accompanied by a concise explanation of the image, giving the context of the acquisition, including any relevant information on the story, scenario, timeline, etc. Each image must be accompanied by the location of the image, the subjects presented, including species name, etc. Links and/or citations to relevant published works are encouraged.
Entry into the contest indicates that you permit Canadian Science Publishing to use your images, along with all descriptions, for promotional activities. Canadian Science Publishing recognizes you, the author of the image, retain full ownership of the copyright of each entry and will credit the image appropriately.
